Sultan Pahang telah diputerakan pada 30 Julai 1959, di Istana Mangga Tunggal, Pekan. Baginda pernah mendapat pendidikan awal di Sekolah Ahmad, Pekan, Sekolah Rendah St. Thomas, Kuantan serta di Sekolah Menengah St. Thomas, Kuantan sebelum melanjutkan pelajaran ke luar negara.
