Kearney was successful in acquiring the college, and in 1904 the cornerstone was laid for what is now the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Classes also began in 1904 with 96 students forming the first class.

The Kearney City Council established the Kearney Community Redevelopment Authority (CRA) by unanimous vote on August 10, 1993. The purpose of the CRA is to study and designate certain areas of the city in need of improvement and development.
