In Lasik, a small flap is created in the side of the cornea. The flap is lifted to give the surgeon access to reshape the cornea with an excimer laser. The flap is then closed. With the RELEX SMILE procedure, a small corneal lenticule is cut by the laser and removed from the eye to change the corneal curvature.
