Ruth Jackson, MD – the first practicing female orthopaedist in the U.S. Ruth Jackson was born on December 13, 1902, in Iowa and moved to Texas with her family as a child where she was described as a tough, headstrong child with the right amount of mischievous and clever; she had a love of the outdoors, particularly horse-riding and hunting.
She was famous for performing “wide awake” laminectomies under local anesthesia after diagnosing through epidural injection. Ruth Jackson Foundation started at Baylor in the 1960s, which supported research endeavors and yearly funded seminars. Dr.Jackson continued to be a role model for women and men.
