Description. Penang has the only vertically divided flag in Malaysia: (light) blue - white - yellow with a palm tree in the middle. Jaume Ollé, 14 January 1996. The flag is a tricolour consisting of vertical stripes of equal width of light blue (at the hoist), white and yellow; on the central (white) stripe is an areca nut palm (known in Malay as pokok pinang) on a mount.
The official name of Penang Hill however was Flagstaff Hill, which is still reflected in its name in Malay, Bukit Bendera (literally "Flag Hill"). The name was a reference to the flagstaff outside "Bel Retiro", which was the residence of the Governor of Penang built by Francis Light c. 1789.
The flag of Penang consists of three vertical bands and an areca-nut palm on a grassy mount in the centre. All three bands are of equal width. From left to right, the colour of each band is light blue, white and yellow. The colours of the flag are derived from the tinctures of the coat of arms of Penang granted by King George VI in September 1949.
