Franz Waxman is best known for the 150+ film scores he composed in Hollywood beginning at Universal Pictures in 1935 with The Bride of Frankenstein. During his Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer period (1936 – 1942), he wrote the music for The Philadelphia Story and seven Spencer Tracy films including Captains Courageous and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
After the film was released, Berlin wrote Waxman a letter, in which he graciously congratulated Waxman, not only on the arrangement of his title song into the film, but on the beauty of Waxman’s love theme. In addition to Buttons and Umecki’s Oscar wins, Sayonara’s art direction and sound also won.

When the music was not nominated for Academy Award consideration Waxman protested by resigning from the Academy. Newman was not available to score Demetrius and Waxman was the unanimous choice of 20th Century Fox production chief Darryl Zannack, director Delmer Daves and studio music director Newman. Waxman created his own Roman musical mosaic.
