James Dewey Watson (born April 6, 1928) is an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist. In 1953, he co-authored with Francis Crick the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule.

Since the fall of 1956, he has been a member of the Harvard Biology Department, first as Assistant Professor, then in 1958 as an Associate Professor, and as Professor since 1961. During this interval, his major research interest has been the role of RNA in protein synthesis.
In 1944, Oswald Avery proved that DNA is the bearer of organisms' genetic code. Further explanation was provided when James Watson and Francis Crick determined the structure of the DNA molecule in 1953.
