Despite his rather lofty name, Raffles was born on board the ship Ann off the coast of Port Morant, Jamaica, in the West Indies. His father Captain Benjamin Raffles (1739–1811), a Yorkshire man, was the ship’s skipper that plied the West Indies trade.
