To be fair, a common trait in "gatekeepers" is that they think traditional schooling is required (cf. people who think you can't be a real musician if you haven't studied at a conservatory).
Oct 4, 2021 · In 2017/2018, from a base rating of 2450 he made serious efforts at getting to GM (he already had 1 norm). The highest rating he got to was 2477 and to be honest that felt more like a statistical blip than any kind of true improvement. He did several GM-norm tournaments but wasn't able to get any GM norms.
Aug 25, 2021 · Don't give away a piece for 3 or more pawns without analyzing very far ahead. It is very dangerous, because your opponent can use his extra piece to checkmate you, before you can queen any of your extra pawns. Never resign. 99% of chess players can mess up almost any position. Don't resign just because you're lost.
Always trade bad pieces for good pieces. Never sacrifice. Always sacrifice the exchange (or: sacrificing the exchange is not sacrificing) If your king is two squares in front of your pawn, the only drawing move is King takes pawn (the Finegold rule) If your opponent plays f4, always play exf4. If your opponent's pawn is on b5, play a4.
Feb 16, 2023 · The Latest on GM Alejandro Ramírez with GM Ben Finegold and Karen Boyd. The Costa Rican excuse ain't going to cut it. Finegold's focus here is a little too much on mitigating factors, and a little too little on the impact on victims, and on women's chess. Yeah, I tend to agree.
Mar 31, 2024 · A highly rated bot may spend its blunder budget early in the game and play perfectly from then on. I don't know if this is true for all or even some bots. Do today's bots really mimic the styles of individuals or do they just try to match the rating of the player? I take it that blundering the queen is not in character for Ben Feingold.
