Jean-Louis Martinoty (20 January 1946 in Étampes – 27 January 2016 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French writer and an opera director.. [1] [2] Renowned for his stagings of baroque operas in the eighties, he was also General Administrator of the Paris Opera (1986–1989).
After studying classical literature and the cello, Jean-Louis Martinoty became an essayist, a journalist, a radio personality and a music critic for the newspaper L’Humanité . It was in that capacity that he discovered opera, met Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and ultimately became the latter’s assistant.
