Lenfilm, a film studio based in Leningrad, was the second-largest production company in the Soviet Union, after Mosfilm, the Moscow studio. At its height in the 1960s and early 1970s, when a cluster of young filmmakers began making adventurous new movies, it produced up to fifty films a year.
How did Lenfilm, one of the largest and most diverse film studios in the USSR, cope with the challenges of technological change, work discipline, and creative freedom in the 1960s and 1970s? This chapter explores the conflicts and contradictions, but also rewards, of the studio's work culture, division of labor, and corporate values.
