David R. MacDonald was born in 1945 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the third oldest of nine children. He graduated from Hackensack High School in 1963 and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Hampton University (Hampton, Virginia) where he majored in art education.
David MacDonald was born and grew up in southern Ontario. After studying English Literature at the University of Toronto, David became a writer and editor, specializing in books for young people.
