The Old Maid is a 1939 American drama film directed by Edmund Goulding. The screenplay by Casey Robinson is based on the 1935 Pulitzer Prize -winning play of the same name by Zoë Akins, which was adapted from the 1924 Edith Wharton novella The Old Maid: the Fifties (taken from the collection of novellas Old New York).
Zoe Akins, an American dramatist, born in Humansville, Mo. She contributed poems, criticisms, etc., to various magazines, and achieved a brilliant success with her play, Declasscèe, produced at the Empire Theatre, New York, in 1919, with Ethyl Barrymore in the leading rôle.
Zoe Akins was the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Old Maid (1936) and was known for her comedies in both of her writing careers: she wrote for stage and screen for two decades. Starting in the 1920s, she had sixteen plays on Broadway in as many years.
