舞台俳優を経て映画俳優となり、戦前は 時代劇 などで活躍したのち、戦後は 東宝 を中心に数多くの作品に出演。 特に 黒澤明 監督作品には欠かせない俳優であった。 来歴・人物. 誕生から舞台俳優. 1905年 （明治38年） 3月12日 （ 日曜日 ）、 兵庫県 朝来郡 生野町 （現在の 朝来市 生野町）に生まれる。 三菱 生野鉱業所の 冶金 技師をする父・島崎毛登女（もとめ [注釈 2] ）と、母・喜与の次男として 口銀谷 の 生野鉱山社宅 （甲社宅）で育つ。 祖父は 土佐藩 主・ 山内容堂 の 小姓 から250石取りの 祐筆 に上がり、 鳥羽・伏見の戦い には隊長として出陣した経歴を持つ 武士 であった。
