August Horch (12 October 1868 – 3 February 1951) was a German engineer and automobile pioneer, the founder of the manufacturing giant that eventually became Audi . August Horch founded his first automobile company, August Horch & Cie, in Cologne in 1899. Shortly after that, in 1909, he set up a new automobile company in Zwickau, which has been operating under the name Audiwerke AG, Zwickau since 1910. This marked the birth of the modern company’s name.

The Horch Werke in Zwickau had never departed from the principle laid down by company founder August Horch, namely only to build good, powerful cars. Horch’s vehicles were among the leading products of the German automobile industry from the very start.
Following a dispute with the Supervisory Board, in 1909 the renowned designer August Horch left the business and founded a new company, August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH. Renamed Audi Automobilwerke GmbH in 1910, its Zwickau factory saw the first Audi roll off the production line in the same year.
August Horch was a genius of mechanical engineering and one of the earliest contributors to the development of the automobile. His first job in the industry came courtesy of Karl Benz, who hired him to manage his factory in Mannheim.
