  2. St Mary’s College is a constituent college of Durham University. It is located mainly on Elvet Hill to the South of the city centre, becoming the first Durham’s “ hill colleges ”.

  5. St Mary’s was established in 1899 and is the third oldest college at Durham. It was originally an all women’s college, but it has now been mixed since 2005 and is home to around 800 undergraduates and 150 postgraduates.

  7. St Mary's College. Our History. The history of St Mary’s College is entwined with that of women’s education at the University of Durham. In 1895 the University Senate agreed to the granting of degrees to women and this resulted in a supplementary charter being granted.
