Although he was much honoured in his lifetime, critical judgement on Tippett's legacy has been uneven, the greatest praise generally reserved for his earlier works. His centenary in 2005 was a muted affair; apart from the few best-known works, his music has not been performed frequently in the 21st century.
Sir Michael Tippett was one of the leading English composers of the 20th century. Tippett studied composition (1923–28) at the Royal College of Music and privately (1930–32) with R.O. Morris. After serving as music director (1940–51) at Morley College, London, he became a radio and television.
Tippett was a composer of risk and originality; his imagination often ran ahead of performers, audiences and critics. Early pieces, once dismissed, are now thought masterpieces of British composition.
