The Goodman, in partnership with Disney Theatrical Group, aims to build a sustainable tradition of musical theater within local elementary schools. Through the 17-week program, teaching artists work with students and teachers to craft the school’s musical, and train teachers to become directors, music directors, choreographers and stage managers.
The Goodman School built a formidable reputation over the following decades and graduated many stellar theater artists, including Karl Malden, Sam Wanamaker, Geraldine Page, Shelley Berman, Harvey Korman, Jos é Quintero, Linda Hunt and Joe Mantegna.
Designed for twelve high school students, this summer 2023 program will use Goodman Theatre’s production of TOMMY as the backdrop to not only explore arts criticism but to explore contemporary social issues through the lens of the production.

During the school year, the Goodman hosts the Cyndie Bandle Young Critics (CBYC) and the Goodman Youth Arts Council (GYAC).

The Goodman, which originally included a professional company and drama school, officially opened on October 20, 1925, with three plays by Goodman performed at the dedication ceremony. Due to financial burden, the acting company was disbanded in 1930, but the drama school remained open.
