William George Bonin (January 8, 1947 – February 23, 1996), also called the Freeway Killer[ 2 ] and the Freeway Strangler, [ 3 ] was an American serial killer and sex offender who raped, tortured, and murdered young men and boys between November 1968 and June 1980 in southern California.
The Freeway Killer was a collective epithet given by the media and the police to what the media believed was a single serial killer claiming young male victims, predominantly in California during the 1970s and early 1980s, and who often discarded the victims' bodies alongside or upon freeways.
In 1979, dozens of murdered teenage boys were uncovered on California’s sprawling freeways, with one victim as young as twelve. As police discovered the bodies of the victims, their corpses showed signs of violent sexual assault with the trademark of the serial killer being death by strangulation and stabbing.
