For example, a bar is that location where a river meets an ocean - "We were just in the bar when the storm struck." "We were sitting at the bar", could have the meaning you gave it.
Jul 24, 2010 · at the bar or on the bar, where I live people prefer to use the latter one. It doesn’t make sense to me because if I say I’m working on the bar that means literally I’m standing on the bar that makes me laugh.
Jan 9, 2013 · 'At the bar' would normally be understood as standing by the bar (counter), but 'at a bar' would normally mean "at some place for drinks, like Rick's (or a pub or a nightclub)". You might spend all evening at a bar - but you probably wouldn't spend all of that evening at the bar .
