Fanny is a 1961 American Technicolor romantic drama film directed by Joshua Logan. The screenplay by Julius J. Epstein is based on the book for the 1954 stage musical of the same title by Logan and S.N. Behrman, which in turn had been adapted from Marcel Pagnol 's trilogy.
With Leslie Caron, Horst Buchholz, Maurice Chevalier, Charles Boyer. Young Marius dreams of leaving his dull provincial life and seeing the world. When the beautiful Fanny declares her adoration for him, Marius must choose between an adventurous life at sea and the grandest adventure of all: love.
In 1954, Joshua Logan, S.N. Behrman and Harold Rome reworked the trilogy into the Broadway musical Fanny. Logan's 1961 film drops the play's songs but uses Rome's music as underscore. The script is by Julius J. Epstein, of Casablanca fame.
Young lovers Fanny (Leslie Caron) and Marius (Horst Buchholz) seem made for each other, but he also wants to set out to sea. Eventually, Marius departs and, after years, they are finally reunited...
Fanny, the daughter of Honorine, a poor fishmonger in the port of Marseille in the 1930's, has always loved Marius, the handsome son of César, the headstrong proprietor of a waterfront bar. Marius, however, dreams only of the sea and has secretly made arrangements to sail away on a schooner bound for the "isles beneath the wind."
