However, from a purely grammatical point of view, "yesterday night" is possible as an appositive phrase. The reason "yesterday night" sounds odd is because there is already a shorter way of saying this---i.e. last night.

Yesterday evening usually refers to a period the preceding day from about 5 at the earliest to midnight at the latest, whereas Last night generally refers to any time before you went to sleep, starting from erm… late afternoon.

I've always though that this was because the night was almost as much today's as yesterday's, whereas the evening was clearly yesterday's.

But bear in mind that this is an imaginary fragment of a unknown writing, possibly written in the first person with all the emotional (i.e. illogical) implications that that brings.

  7. Jan 25, 2009 · Perhaps its just the apparent contradiction in saying day and night in the same phrase that makes it less idiomatic. Maybe we could say yesternight (not actually a word). Yesternight (the night of yesterday, last night) has been a word since 1334 (OED). It may not be used a great deal these days but it was used by several 19th century writers.

I would use "all last night" to mean "all of last night until I went to sleep" or "all of last night during my sleep". - All last night I wanted a beer, but we didn't have any left. - All last night I had bad dreams.

  10. Sep 18, 2014 · 'Yesterday night' could be rewritten 'yester day-night'. It is not at all clear what a 'day-night' is supposed to be. Neither would you say 'last day night' for the same reason. It is not at all clear what a 'day-night' is supposed to be.
