Rama III (born March 31, 1788, Bangkok—died April 2, 1851, Bangkok) was the king of Siam (1824–51) who made Siam’s first tentative accommodations with the West, and under whom the country’s boundaries reached their maximum extent.

Like his father and grandfather, Rama III was a devout and faithful follower of Buddhism. He built or repaired 50 temples, including the first Chinese style temple at Rajaorasa, the highest stupa at Wat Arun, the Golden Mountain at Wat Sraket, the metal temple at Wat Ratchanadda, and Chetupol Temple, or Wat Pho.
Born under the name of Prince Thap, then known as Nangklao, Rama III is the third king of the kingdom of Siam. It is part of the Chakri Dynasty, the current ruling dynasty of Thailand. His reign is characterized by unparalleled military power over the entire Indochinese peninsula and control, in fact, of Vietnam and Cambodia.
