1839 - 1899. Alfred Sisley was born in Paris of British parents. He lived in France, and occasionally visited England. He trained in the studio of Gleyre in Paris,and became a member of the Impressionist group; his work was close to that of Pissarro and Monet. He mainly painted landscapes.
His father was a businessman who spent much of his life in Paris, and Sisley was destined for a commercial career before he turned to painting. In 1862 he entered the studio of Gleyre and there met Renoir, Monet, and Bazille, with whom he formed the early nucleus of the Impressionist group.
