Aesop ( / ˈiːsɒp / EE-sop or / ˈeɪsɒp / AY-sop; Greek: Αἴσωπος, Aísōpos; formerly rendered as Æsop) is an almost certainly legendary Greek fabulist and storyteller, said to have lived c. 620–564 BCE, and credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables.

Jun 28, 2024 · Aesop, the supposed author of a collection of Greek fables, almost certainly a legendary figure. The probability is that Aesop was no more than a name invented to provide an author for fables centering on beasts, so that ‘a story of Aesop’ became synonymous with ‘fable.’
On the arrival of printing, collections of Aesop's fables were among the earliest books in a variety of languages. Through the means of later collections, and translations or adaptations of them, Aesop's reputation as a fabulist was transmitted throughout the world.

The fables, numbering 725, were originally told from person-to-person as much for entertainment purposes but largely as a means for relaying or teaching a moral or lesson.
