Alachua County ( / əˈlætʃuə / ⓘ ə-LATCH-oo-ə) is a county in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 278,468. [1] The county seat is Gainesville, [2] the home of the University of Florida since 1906, when the campus opened with 106 students.

Oct 17, 2023 · Sitting northwest of the much larger Gainesville, Alachua is the third-largest city in North Central Florida. I found a lot to love about Alachua, from its historic Main Street to pastoral farms, and the beautiful nature all around. Contrasting with many people’s idea of the Florida countryside, Alachua has some dramatic limestone geology close by.
