  5. When Stark County was established in May, 1883, it comprised all of what is now the counties of Stark, Billings, Golden Valley, Slope, Bowman, Adams and Hettinger. But within a few years other counties were cut out of it and it was reduced to its present size: 36 miles long and 24 miles wide, with an extra township on the northeast corner.
