ASTM D1238 describes the melt flow rate determination (melt mass-flow rate (MFR), melt volume-flow rate (MVR) and flow rate ratio (FRR)) on unfilled or filled thermoplastic melted mass. Additional requirements for measurements on PVC compounds are defined in ASTM D3364.
ASTM D1238 covers the measurement of the rate of extrusion of molten resins through a standard die (2.095 x 8 mm). The test is performed under prescribed conditions of temperature, load, and piston position in the barrel as the timed measurement is being made.
Melt Flow Rate measures the rate of extrusion of thermoplastics through an orifice at a prescribed temperature and load. It provides a means of measuring flow of a melted material which can be used to differentiate grades as with polyethylene, or determine the extent of degradation of the plastic as a result of molding.
