Obviously Jesus was not telling His disciples to pray only for bread. But bread was a staple in the diet of the Jews, and had been so for many years.

14 Sep 2022 · It's so instructive that Jesus tells us to pray, Give us this day our daily bread. If we're honest, I'd kind of like it to say, Give us this year our yearly bread. God, once a year I'll come to you.
Every good gift we receive comes from Him and not from ourselves (James 1:17). The prayer for our daily bread is the humble expression that we understand that to be true. This concept of "daily bread" provides important context when Jesus speaks about anxiety later in this chapter (Matthew 6:25–26).
We ask for our daily bread; which teaches us constantly to depend upon Divine Providence. We beg of God to give it us; not sell it us, nor lend it us, but give it. The greatest of men must be beholden to the mercy of God for their daily bread. We pray, Give it to us. This teaches us a compassion for the poor.
When we say, “Give us this day our daily bread,” we pray for others as well as ourselves. We acknowledge that even our food comes from God's hand and that what He gives us is not for ourselves alone.
4 Jan 2022 · One portion of the prayer says, "Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11). The first, and most obvious, meaning of this request is that God would sustain us physically. Jesus was perhaps alluding to God’s provision of manna , which was given every day in the desert (Exodus 16:4-12; Deuteronomy 8:3; John 6:31).
