I was watching Cowboy Bebop and in episode 19: Wild Horses - they showed the space shuttle Columbia. During that episode one of the characters called out that the heat shield tiles were falling off prior to reentry (from rescuing Spike) and that would likely cause the shuttle to be destroyed if they entered the atmosphere.
