Nov 23, 2022 · The female supernumerary quota in admissions to IITs was introduced in 2018 following the recommendations by a committee headed by the then IIT Mandi director Timothy Gonsalves. Popularly known as ‘the required slight push’, this was aimed at repairing the skewed gender ratio on IIT campuses predominantly occupied by boys.
On an average, the ratio of male to female students on an IIT campus is 10:1 despite women performing significantly well in the JEE exams. To encourage and uplift the talented girls of the country to step ahead, the Government of India introduced the supernumerary seats.

The concept of female supernumerary seats in JEE was introduced in 2018. In 2018, the IIT admissions council announced that 14% of the seats would be reserved for girls in all IITs. In 2019, the total number of seats that were reserved for females increased to 17%.
