Dec 19, 2023 · The construction of the Arc de Triomphe began in the autumn of 1806, with Emperor Napoléon I as its commissioner. Weighing some 48,000 tonnes and measuring 45.90 metres in height, it took some 30 years to build and was designed by Jean Chalgrin as a tribute to Napoléon’s victories.
The arch was designed by the architect Jean François Thérèse Chalgrin, upon commission by Napoleon Bonaparte to commemorate his victory at Austerlitz and honor his army. Chalgrin’s neoclassical design drew heavily on inspiration from ancient Roman architecture.
