Mar 30, 2022 · Waterfall Hike. It’s easy to create a 3.3-mile loop hike that goes all the way around the perimeter of Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. It doesn’t matter which way you start on the loop, but I opted for a clockwise hike in order to enjoy the waterfall early and the quiet of the forest late.

One mile from the beltway on Georgetown Pike, the Scott's Run Nature Preserve is a little piece of wilderness saved from urban sprawl. Originally the Burling Tract, it avoided development in the 1970's and was renamed the Dranesville District Park.
Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. Description. This forest is composed of tall, slender trees including tulip poplar and American beech. The extensive 385-acre park is home to a number of breeding birds, including summer and scarlet tanagers, cerulean, Kentucky, and yellow-throated warblers.
Trailing arbutus, Virginia bluebells and sessile trillium blooming on the steep hillsides create a small oasis of rare and fragile plants. Scott's Run offers some of the best hiking in Fairfax County. There are two entrances into Scott’s Run off of Georgetown Pike with small parking lots and trailheads leading into the stream valley park.
