The Newcomers was a special series of stories that described Canada as a country of immigrant origins. Seven stories aired over a span of 2½ years. Richard Nielsen and Pat Ferns were commissioned by Imperial Oil (which was about to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 1980) to produce these stories.

This story is about a group of emigrants who leave Ireland and set sail on a ship for Canada after famine cripples their homeland. As they are at sea, they have to deal with the fury of the North Atlantic, including problems on board their ship, not to mention what happens after arriving in Canada.
The Newcomers was a series of seven hour-long Canadian television specials that aired from 1977 to 1980 on CBC Television. The series was sponsored by Imperial Oil to mark the company's 100th anniversary in 1980.
