You need to choose whether you need a verb or a noun. It is true that ignorant is more commonly used than ignoramus, but I don't think ignoramus is old fashioned.

As far as I know "la fata ignorante" has no particular meaning in Italian, it simply means "the ignorant fairy", but it is a strange thing to say, I guess. Where did you read/heard this expression?
