Pada tahun 1917, Sultan Johor mengarahkan Onn Jaafar menyertai Pasukan Tentera Johor (JMF) dan ditempatkan di Pulau Belakang Mati, Singapura, markas JMF. Jawatan tertinggi beliau ialah Leftenan. Pasukan tentera Johor Malay Force ini ditubuhkan oleh Sultan Abu Bakar.
