Dec 18, 2015 · Having seen the film on Thursday (The joys of an earlier release date in the UK), no you don't need to have seen Revenge of the Sith. If you have seen Star Wars 4-6 (ANH, ESB and ROTJ) you will have all the back story you will need to know, and even then there are enough hints of the back story to get you up to speed in the opening titles and throughout the film.
In the following arcs in this particular series (2017 Darth Vader), Darth Vader is sent on a series of tasks from hunting down Jedi, to bleeding a Jedi's lightsaber to take for his own, to fight an ancient Sith Lord (Momin) come alive, and finding a portal to some kind of dark spirit world on Mustafar, which Vader then makes his home base, despite experiencing loosing Padme` again!
