In term of the title, the Magistrate's Court and First Class Magistrate were changed to the Session Court President who was later known as Session Court Judge, through amendments made under the Subordinate Courts (Amendment) Act 1987.

Fundamental changes have been made in the structure of the subordinate courts by the Subordinate Courts (Amendment) Act, 1978, which came into force with effect from the 1st July 1978. It is proposed in this note to outline the changes as they affect the various Courts.
