Jan 2, 2022 · A generic key is basically just a tool used to allow installing or upgrading to a specific Windows 11 edition. As @NavyLCDR posted, if you have a digital license for the Windows 11 edition, it will then automatically get activated. Very well, this defines the purpose of these keys and the limit of their usage.

If you have a Windows 11 Home edition, click/tap on Upgrade your edition of Windows to expand it open, and click/tap on the Change button to Change product key. Change the product key to the Windows 10/11 Pro OEM product key that you purchased (or Windows 7 or 8/8.1 Pro product key) As of 4/21/2024 this still works, at least for my Win 11 Pro OEM key. The confusion regarding 32-bit vs 64-bit may arise from the fact that Win 10 is available in both 32-bit (x86) as well as 64-bit (x64).

Jun 15, 2022 · Jun 16, 2022. #10. Edit: Once running Home, if the Pro is a OEM key, change the license key with a generic Pro key. (Windows doesn't accept a OEM Pro key to upgrade). It will upgrade to Pro, restart but wont activate. Then change the license key with the OEM Pro. Now it will activate.
