It cannot be replaced by another group of words, even if their ordinary meaning is the same. The phrase "distant relatives" has nothing to do with geographic distance.

Jul 13, 2016 · away = this means: not present; not here. Ex. My father is away. He is on a business trip overseas. He is not here. far away = this describes a location not close to a specific point of reference. Ex. He lives far away from his family. -far and far away are quite often interchangeable since they are closely related, in my opinion.
