  2. Oct 20, 2009 · While 177 might seem low, this is an untouched port and bowl and things were mighty sloppy with stock Pontiac ports. Plus I chose .500" lift instead of a higher lift because if your new cam has a max .480" lift then the .600" lift doesn't matter. Pontiac iron head chambers were always beautiful but as-cast ports sucked. I've seen some really ...

That said, they are the last of the closed chamber, early style heads with the big valves. They were designed for 100 octane fuel, cheaply and readily available in the '60's.

  4. Oct 11, 2016 · Retarding timing makes an engine run hot. Advancing the timing makes the engine run cooler. The stock timing for the '71 455 HO is 12 degrees BTDC, the 1970 RAIV is 15 degrees so 16 is in the ball park. I attached the distrib/timing specs from the 1968 Pontiac Service Manual just for example.

  5. Jan 23, 2020 · The stroker kit for the 389 was considerably more expensive than stroking a 400. Also abandoned using iron heads and bought E-heads with the savings on the stroker kit and the sale of my 389. Shooting for 10:1 CR on the E-heads, Tripower induction and Crane H-272-2 cam (adv duration 272/284 lift 454/480 and 112 LSA).

  6. Jan 5, 2016 · The RPM H-beams, with the std bolts, are plenty strong enuff for most any reasonable Pontiac street/strip engine. They're $400 shipped. The best price I can find for the Eagles, with 2000 bolts is about $550 + shipping. So, they cost roughly $175 more than the RPM's.

  7. Apr 29, 2021 · The Pontiac distributors I used had 24 (12x2) in the distributor. The factory set the initial at 6 for a total of 30, but they ran best at 36 (12 initial). The most initial I ever ran on a streetcar was 16. That was a hybrid 428. The distributor must have been more like 20, but I don't remember for sure. That engine had #31 heads. Your car will like a lot of initial, but it will get hard to ...

  8. Nov 10, 2011 · Pontiac blocks, being the same dimensionally, have the same overall length, width, crank length, and bore spacing so in terms of bore and stroke they all have the same limits. The significant difference internally between the 400 and the 455, as you probably know, is the diameter of the main bearing journal on the crank - the 400 being 3.000" and the 455 being 3.250". This translates into the ...

  9. Aug 19, 2022 · Use the part (engine block or cylinder head) date code to identify the model year. On engine blocks, this code is usually located on the top center of the block, near the distributor. On cylinder heads, it can be "inside" (under the rocker cover) or on the outside. The format of the code is one (1) alphabetic character followed by three (3 ...

  10. Jan 15, 2019 · It has been said by many that most all Pontiac HR lifters are actually Chevy lifters, with Pontiac link bars. Chevy lifters have a lower oil band. Paul Carter uses Hylift Johnson lifters & grinds an oil groove, from the lifter bore oil feed hole, down 1/4", in order to connect with the lower oil band of the Chevy lifters.
