Puruándiro, es ciudad desde 1858, por decreto del Gobernador del Estado Epitacio Huerta y con fecha de 16 de junio, se le nombró "Puruándiro de Calderón". En la revolución, Puruándiro sirvió de centro de actividades a las fuerzas del coronel Eduardo Gutiérrez.
