The story of Song at Midnight is taken from The Phantom of the Opera. In the back-story the ‘Phantom’ was an actor putting on revolutionary plays (we see a performance that seems to be set in the French Revolution): a wicked landowner desires the ‘Phantom’s’ beloved and his thugs throw acid into the ‘Phantom’s’ face.
