Presumably Carroll felt it was something a talking rabbit might be expected to say.
May 14, 2007 · I checked urbandictionary.com, and they say it is an adjective, "used to describe something that is 'great'. Variations include the cat's pajamas, the cat's meow & the bee's knees. Emma is the Cat's Whiskers!" By the way, Wiki says it's a BE expression that never made it across the pond to the US! Shows what they know!
