I ran the url on a virus scanner site and 6 vendors said it was malicious or contained malware. Is it dangerous or is it legit?

You need a real carrier number. there are sites that sell access to these for temporary verification. Expect around $0.5.

Dec 30, 2022 · VOIP numbers do not work. TextNow, Skype, Google Voice, even the lesser known ones. Thanks very much. JuicySMS worked like a charm. ~3 euros. Choose “openAI” as the option. I used those temporary number websites I found. Some numbers don't work but if you're lucky enough you'll find one that works.

Mobile numbers are likely required so that they can match your ChatGPT queries against information about you, which they can purchase cheaply from “data brokers”, based on your strongly authenticated identity information (like mobile number).
