Thaksin Shinawatra [note 2] (born 26 July 1949) is a Thai businessman and politician. He served in the Thai Police from 1973 to 1987, and was the Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006.
He assumed the official name of " Borommoraja IV " and " Phra Sri Samphet X ", but is known to Thai history as King Taksin, a combination of his popular name, "Phraya Tak", and his first name, "Sin", or the King of Thonburi.
