Kebanyakan penduduknya berbangsa Cina Foo Chow dan Iban dari Batang Rajang. Terdapat juga penduduk Bumiputra lain seperti kaum Melayu dan Melanau.

Sibu is located near the Rajang delta at the confluence of Rajang and Igan rivers. Peat swamp forests and alluvial plains are particularly prevalent in the Sibu Division. Sibu is located on a deep peat soil, which has caused problems in infrastructure development because buildings and roads slowly sink into the ground after its completion.
Bahagian Sibu ialah sebuah bahagian di Sarawak, Malaysia. Ia mempunyai keluasan 8,278.30 kilometer persegi (3,196.27 batu persegi). Jumlah penduduk ialah 303,300 orang pada tahun 2016. Pusat pentadbirannya terletak di bandar Sibu. Bahagian Sibu dibahagikan kepada tiga daerah, iaitu Daerah Sibu, Daerah Kanowit dan Daerah Selangau.

It can be divided into Sibu Town area (129.5 km 2) and the rural areas (2,100.3 km 2). The satellite township of Sibu Jaya (26 km away from the Sibu city) is included in the rural areas.
