    • 1. an ancient city of Egypt, whose ruins are situated on the River Nile about 15 km (nearly 10 miles) south of Cairo. It is thought to have been founded as the capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt c. 3100 bc and is the site of the pyramids of Saqqara and Giza and of the Sphinx.
    • 2. a river port on the Mississippi River in south-western Tennessee; population 669,651 (est. 2008). Founded in 1819, it was the home of blues music in the late 19th century and the scene of the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. It is also the childhood home and burial place of Elvis Presley.
