   • 1. a parasitic fungus that chiefly infects insects, replacing the host tissue with mycelium and producing prominent elongated fruiting bodies. It often affects the behaviour of the host insect, causing it to move to a location favourable for the release of fungal spores.

   Word Origin mid 19th century: modern Latin Cordyceps (genus name), from Greek kordulē ‘club’ + -ceps (from Latin caput ‘head’).
