This subject is the first semester of four that forms an introduction to modern standard Chinese, commonly called Mandarin, the language with the largest number of native speakers in the world. It is the official language of Mainland China and Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore.
In August 2020, Dr Haohsiang Liao launched MITx: Chinese Language in Culture, Level 1, a novice-level MOOC course offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology on edX. This is the first Chinese language MOOC offered by a north American university on edX as well as the first foreign language MOOC on MITx open to the broader public.
Tong Chen is a Lecturer in Chinese, teaching from introductory through advanced levels in the Regular language track, including regularly leading 21G.105 Chinese V (Regular): Discovering Chinese Cultures and Societies.
Haohsiang Liao is Senior Lecturer in Chinese. He has taught at all level of the Chinese curriculum and frequently leads instruction in Tier I subjects of the Regular curriculum track. He is on the executive team of MandarinX MOOC courses on edX and on its academic panel for Chinese language.
